Isaac Haxton
Isaac Haxton was born in New York City, and like a lot of the new generation of internet poker player’s, he was first an avid Magic: The Gathering player. The game of Magic requires players to think hard, concentrate and focus, requiring a lot of skill. It was this background which helped Haxton to make the transition from Magic to poker.
It was actually his friends who got him into the poker world by intriguing him after he watched them successfully make the switch. Haxton was extremely academically gifted and his father was an English professor who wanted his son to exceed academically. Haxton didn’t disappoint and he earned excellent results in his college exams.
Haxton began playing poker at his local casino the ‘Turning Stone Casino’. He started at the $3/$6 limit hold’em games and the more he played the game, the more he wanted to succeed at it.
He would constantly study the game by reading poker books and browsing poker forums. His academic life took over however when he enrolled in Brown University to study computer science. This left him with little for the casino and he had to put poker on hold until his university breaks and holidays. When he would return home he would immediately head to the casino to put his new techniques into action, and he ended up winning over $1500.
After earning so much at the live casino he decided to try his luck online and began playing at Ultimate Bet where he deposited $50. Between lessons at university, Haxton spent all his time studying and playing poker. After his freshman year he played poker all summer to see if he had what it took to become a full-time poker player, and he did! That summer he added an amazing $40,000 to his bankroll. With so much money and having so much success he decided to take a one-year break from university to focus solely on poker.
After crushing the online games for so long, Haxton decided to enter the 2007 PokerStars Caribbean Adventure where he ended up finishing second for a payday of $861,789. However he was forced to sweat on his prize money after a terrible incident for an online poker payment processor. Haxton was paid his winnings into his PokerStars account and he withdrew $800k of his winnings to his Neteller account, however just as he did that the company’s assets were frozen for a cool $55 million. This earned Haxton a lot of publicity and he became known as ‘the guy with $800k stuck in Neteller’.
A few months later his money was withdrawn and he was able to sigh with relief.
Isaac Haxton continues to have great success both online and in live tournaments as well as creating instructional videos for Poker Savvy Plus which is one of the best poker training sites available on the net.
