Jason Mercier
Jason Mercier has become one of the most feared multi-table tournament poker players in the world and has enjoyed several big wins in the last few years, both online and live. Mercier first began playing poker for fun with his high-school friends but he soon began playing internet poker while in college. Mercier was at college studying to become a math teacher and he used his academic skills to give him an edge over his poker opponents.
He began with small but in MTT’s but quickly transitioned to the NLHE cash games where he had much more success and was earning just as much as he would in a full-time job. This meant he lost focus on his studies and eventually he quit college to play online poker full-time.
Playing on PokerStars under the alias ‘treysfull21’, Mercier began multi-tabling $2/$4 NLHE cash games and was crushing them so much that he was able to occasionally try his luck at the $25/$50 games.
Mercier now had a stable bankroll and would play in the PokerStars satellites which awarded seats at big live events. Eventually he won a satellite to the EPT San Remo in April 2008. He had arranged to travel with two friends who were going to accompany him, but instead they opted to travel to Amsterdam, so Mercier was left on his own. Instead of selling his seat he stuck to his plans and travelled to San Remo which would prove to be one of the best decisions of his life.
Mercier ended up defeating Anthony Lellouche heads-up to take down his first EPT title and a first-place check for a staggering $1,372,893.
Next for Mercier was the 2008 WSOP where he made three cashes, just missing out on a final table appearance by finishing 13th in the $2500 NLHE event. Mercier then travelled back to Europe for the EPT Barcelona Open. Yet again he made the final table and eventually busted in 6th place for $324,946, with German player Sebastian Ruthenberg taking down the event for over $1 million.
Mercier then travelled to London where he final-tabled the £5,000 Pot-Limit Omaha WSOPE event. Despite entering the final-table second in chips, Mercier ran into several bad spots and couldn’t overcome a final table which included Chris Ferguson and Max Pescatori.
After this ‘disappointment’ for Mercier, he decided to stay in London and enter the EPT London £20,000 high-roller event. There was 86 players who stumped up the large buy-in fee, but yet again Mercier came through to make the final table. This time he didn’t disappoint and went on to take down his second EPT win and the prestigious title to win $944,847 for first place, after overcoming a final table which included David Benyamine, John Juana and Poker Savvy Plus (one of the best poker training sites) coach Isaac Haxton.
2009 was another successful year for Mercier, he made 16 live tournament cashes with 9 of those being final-table appearances.
To date he has won $3,994,189 alone in live tournaments and much more if you include his online results. Mercier is now a Team PokerStars Pro and he plays at the site under his new alias ‘jasonmercier’.
